The Moderator is elected at the Annual Meeting to serve a two-year period as the presiding lay officer for the church. The person presides at all meetings of the Church Council, the Executive Committee, the Annual Meeting, and any special meetings called during the term of office. In addition, the Moderator frequently attends other committee meetings simply as a way of keeping in touch with what others are doing. This is especially important with the Board of Trustees.
In addition, the Moderator works with the pastor to assure a smooth-running church administration. Together, they work with staff to assure that the staff meets the expectations of the members and fulfill their designated roles.
Having high social skills and a warm personality seems to go hand-in-hand in the selection of a Moderator. One of the pluses for the job is getting to know those serving on every HSCC’s committee.
